量の表現

長さ(length)
「AはBの３倍の長さである。」
“A” is three times as long as “B”. 「Aは３回だけBと同じく長い。」これは正確な表現である。一方で、
“A” is three times longer than “B”. 「Aは３回だけＢより長い。」これでは３倍の長さなのか、４倍の長さなのかあいまいである。できるだけ “three time as long as” のような表現を用いるほうが正確である。ただし、比較の対象が量的に明示されておらず、漠然としたものであれば、”longer than “ でよい。
“A” is twice longer than we imagine.
大きさ(size) 「この本はあの本の２倍の大きさである。」
This book is twice as large as that one.
This book is twice the size of that one.
That book is half as large as this one.
That book is half the size of this one.
面積(area)
「Aの面積はＢの面積の４倍である。」
The area of “A” is four times (as large as) that of “B”. ：”as large as”は省略できる。
“A” is four times as large in area as “B”.
重さ(weight)
「AはＢの３倍の重さである。」
“A” is three times as heavy as “B”.
“A” weights three times as much as “B”.
The weight of “A” is three times as great as that of “B”.
体積(volume)
「Aの体積はＢの体積の４倍である。」
“A” is four times as great in volume as “B”.
The volume of “A” is four times (as great as) that of “B”.
角度(angle)
「Aの角度はＢの角度の2倍である。」
The angle of “A” is double that of “B”.
The angle of “A” is twice as large as that of “B”.
曲率(curve)
「AはＢの２倍の曲率である。」
The curve of “A” is twice as large as that of “B”.
金額(amount of money)
「AはＢより３倍高価である。」
“A” is three times as expensive as “B”.
パーセント(percentage)
「今年の売り上げは昨年の売り上げより１０パーセント伸びた。」
Sales rose 10 percent over (those of) last year.
深さ(depth)
「この湖はあの湖より２倍深い。」
This lake is twice as deep as that one.
厚さ(thickness)
「この板はあの板より３倍厚い。」
This board is three times as thick as that one.
人口(population)
「アメリカの人口は日本の人口の約２倍である。」
The population of the United States is about twice that of Japan.
twice を two times, double に置き換えてもより。
高さ(height)
「あのビルは隣のビルより約５メートル高い。」
That building is about five meters higher than the neighboring one.
温度(temperature)
「今日の最高気温は昨日より５度高い。」
The highest temperature (today) was five degree higher than (that of) yesterday.
