Lightning Prediction Indicators Using the Volumes of Updraft and Graupel Regions

Kazuya Morishita

Lightning is a serious meteorological phenomenon caused by developing cumulonimbus clouds. Since lightning disasters can cause serious damage to human life and property, it is important to keep a grace period (lead time) before the appearance of active lightning phenomena to alert the public. According to the riming electrification mechanism, which has been supported as the charge generation mechanism in thunderstorms, charge separation is thought to be caused by the collision of graupels and ice crystals in the cloud. The formation and growth of graupels require the attachment of supercooled water droplets supplied from the lower layers of the cloud by the updrafts.

Therefore, both of graupels and updrafts are considered likely to be effective indicators for lightning prediction. Lightning caused by cold fronts (frontal thunderstorm) can be predicted by analyzing the movement of the fronts, but lightning caused by local convection clouds (heat thnderstorm) is difficult to predict time and location of lightning in the early stages because of the rapid development ofcumulonimbus clouds. The process of strong updraft forming graupels and the graupels causing charge separation leading to electrical discharge suggests that the volumes of graupel regions increase prior to the increase in lightning, and the volumes of updraft regions are expected to increase even further prior to the volumes of graupel regions. In this study, the volumes of updraft and graupel regions in thunderclouds were calculated for 6 cases of active thunderstorms in the Tokai region during the summer season, and their time variations with discharge frequencies were investigated. The purpose of this study is to investigate the time difference between the increase in the volumes of updraft and graupel regions and the increase in discharge frequencies, and to examine whether the utilizing the volumes of updraft and graupel regions as prediction indicators in the early stages of thunderstorms can narrow down the increase in the risk of thunderstorms temporally and apatially.

In this study, horizontal reflectivity (Zhh) and specific differential phase (KDP) observed by the dual-polarization Doppler radar for airport weather at Chubu Centrair International Airport (Chubu DRAW) were used to determine the graupel regions by a simple method. The graupel regions for which volumes were calculated were limited to an altitude of 5000 m or higher, and 3 different lower limits of Zhh, 25 dBZ, 30 dBZ, and 35 dBZ, were considered as lightning prediction indicators. For 3 cases in 2022 of the 6 total cases, Dual Doppler analysis was also performed using Doppler velocity data from the Chubu DRAW and Nagoya radar to determine the updraft velocities. The updraft regions for which volumes were calculated were limited an altitude of 4500 m or less, and 7 different lower limits of updraft velocity, 4 m/s to 10 m/s in 1 m/s increments, were considered as lightning prediction indicators. Discharge frequencies were determined by using the JMA lightning detection network system (LIDEN) data to create scatter plots with the regions of graupel or updraft regions, and a single regression analysis was performed to obtain correlation coefficients. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the indicators to predict for lightning in the early stages of thunderstorms, the time variations in the correlation coefficients between the discharge frequencies and the regions of graupel or updraft regions with a time lag preceding the discharge frequencies was analyzed with the time when the discharge frequency is at its maximum as the base time.

The results showed that the correlation coefficients between the volumes of graupel regions and discharge frequencies above 5000 m altitude without time difference, in 4 of the 6 total cases, were significantly stronger than the correlation coefficient of 0.74 shown in the previous study. With time differences, 4 cases maintained significantly strong positive correlation coefficients of 0.8 or higher even with a 5-minute difference, but with a 10-minute or more differences, the correlation coefficients tended to decrease as a whole, although the difference was large in each case, and no time difference was identified where the correlation coefficients became large in common with multiple cases.

On the other hand, the correlation coefficients between the volumes of updraft regions below 4500 m altitude and the discharge frequencies reached its maximum witha 10-minute to 15-minute differences, which may indicate that upgrafts contributes to discharge. In the case of August 30, 2022, the distribution of the updraft regions at an altitude of 4500 m and the distribution of the 15 minutes later discharge location based on LIDEN corresponded well spatially. In a previous study, the volumes of updraft regions above -5°C altitude was strongly positively correlated with the discharge frequencies, but the correlation coefficients decreased as the time difference preceding the discharge frequencies was added. However, by using the volumes of updraft regions at below 0°C altitude (below 4500 m altitude) as indicators, it became clear that the correlation coefficient reached its maximum with time differences.

These results suggest that the volumes of updraft regions of the lower layers, which are considered to have stronger updraft ahead of the upper layers, are effective as lightning prediction indicators in the early stages of thnderstorms, and that using these indicators enables prediction of active lightning events with a lead time of about 15 minutes. On the other hand, although the volumes of graupel regions showed a strong positive correlation with the discharge frequencies at the same time and with a 5-minute dirferrence, there were regions that were identified as graupel regions but did not lead to lightning phenomena in the case of August 30, 2022, suggesting that there are issues in setting the regions to be analyzed graupel regions in order to predict the discharge frequencies 10 minutes or more later. In addition, since the volumes of graupel regions are not the indicators that take into account the number density of graupels, they may have limitations as indicators to express the degree of charge separation. In some cases, such as the case of August 31, 2020, the correlation that kept lead time could not be found from the data available at the time of trying to predict lightning. However, considering the mechanism of charge separation in thunderclouds, it is desirable to develop indicators that can more appropriately evaluate the risk of lightning by combining both of volumes of updraft and graupel regions. In the future, it is desirable to more generalize and verify the relation between the volumes of updraft and graupel regions and lightning frequencies by increasing the number of cases to be analyzed.
