Characteristics of Solid Precipitation Particles based on Multi-Frequency Radar Observations

Yusuke Goto

Various kinds of precipitation particles such as cloud droplets, raindrops, ice crystals, snowflakes, and graupel particles exist in clouds. Collision coalescence or aggregation is one of the growing processes of precipitation particles, caused by difference fall velocity. The particle size is an important factor to affect the fall velocity of precipitation particles. Therefore, characteristics of size for precipitation particle should be clarified. The dual-frequency ratio, which is calculated by combining radar reflectivity obtained by different frequency radars simultaneously enable us to estimate the characteristics of size (median particle size) for precipitation particles. Global statistical analysis of characteristics of size for liquid precipitation particles (cloud droplets and raindrops) using the dual-frequency ratio has been conducted in several previous studies. However, those for solid precipitation particles (ice crystals, snowflakes, and graupel particles) are limited. Thus, we focus on solid precipitation particles, and the main purposes of the present study are to develop an approach to retrieve characteristics of cloud microphysical using ground-based and satellite radars, and to discuss the relationship between characteristics of size for solid precipitation particles and temperature fields using dual-frequency ratio. Winter solid precipitation cases in Ishikawa and Hokkaido were selected and analyzed using ground-based X-band (XRAIN, wavelength is about 3 cm) and Ka-band (wavelength is about 8.6 mm) radars, and Ku-band radar (KuPR, wavelength is about 2.2 cm) onboard the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) main satellite.

The ground radar data are carefully calibrated using polarimetric parameters and scattering simulation by T-matrix algorithm in advance.

The relationship between the dual-frequency ratio calculated using KuPR and ground-based Ka-band radar, and the radar reflectivity are obtained for the cases of Ishikawa and Hokkaido, respectively. As a result, the dual-frequency ratio value in Ishikawa is greater than those in Hokkaido at a certain reflectivity value. This suggests that size and number concentration for solid precipitation particles in Ishikawa are larger and lesser than those in Hokkaido. The averaged surface temperature in the analyzed cases is about 0 °C in Ishikawa and that about −5 °C in Hokkaido. In the vertical profile of air temperature, the average temperature in Ishikawa is also about 5 °C higher than that in Hokkaido in all levels. Since aggregation of snowflakes mostly occurs around −5 °C to 0 °C, it is expected that aggregation is more likely to occur in Ishikawa which has an air layerbetween −5 °C and 0 °C above the ground level. Thus, aggregation of snowflakes is promoted in Ishikawa, resulting size and number concentration for solid precipitation particles in Ishikawa are larger and lesser than those in Hokkaido.

This study is also suggested that the differences of wavelength need to be large (e.g., Ku and Ka bands). This is because the sensitivity of the dual-frequency ratio may be lower when the differences of wavelength are small (e.g., between the X and Ku bands).
