Identification of gust types and Estimation of environment conditions along the Baiu frontal precipitation system

Kanna Tsukagoshi

On July 8, 2020, four gust events occurred within about one hour, along the Baiu frontal precipitation system in the Tokai region. We studied the characteristics of environmental field and types of the four gusts using the local objective analysis data of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA-LANAL) and the Extended Radar Information Network (XRAIN) data of Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). The analysis of the environmental field showed that all the gusts occurred in a precipitation system developed along a shear line when an advection of water vapor was caused by the southwesterly. The instability of the environmental atmosphere was smaller than that of supercell tornadoes. From single and dual Doppler analyses of XRAIN, three gusts in Kuwana City in Mie Prefecture, Toyohashi City in Aichi Prefecture, and Hamamatsu City in Shizuoka Prefecture were identified as tornadoes, and the gust in Yaotsu Town, in Gifu Prefecture was identified as a downburst. These tornadoes were associated with distinctive echo; the tornado in Kuwana City occurred as part of a precipitation system that exhibited a hook-shaped echo, and tornadoes in Toyohashi City and Hamamatsu City occurred in precipitation system of bow echo. Downburst in Yaotsu Town occurred when the precipitation reached the peak intensity after the development stage of precipitation cells in the system. In about one hour when four gusts occurred, splitting of precipitation system occurred, and the system was separated into northern and southern parts. Tornado with hook echo was in the splitting point of the two precipitation systems. The southern precipitation system developed to a bow echo and caused two tornadoes. The northern system developed and started to weaken with the downburst occurrence. It is considered that the split of precipitation system is related to occurrences of gusts. Finally, we compared the Baiu front of this case to typical Baiu front and indicated that the Baiu front had characteristics of large gradient of potential temperature like a cold front and large water vapor gradient which is characteristics of a typical Baiu front. The combination of these two characteristics is considered to be an essential factor for occurrences of four gusts in this Baiu frontal precipitation system.
