Study on Structure and Evolution of Atmospheric Rivers Associated with Typhoons

Risa Aoki

Typhoons are accompanied by heavy rainfalls and strong winds. Heavy rainfalls occur in eyewall and spiral rainbands, while they also occasionally occur far from the typhoon center. In this study, we consider an atmospheric river (AR) as a cause of heavy rainfall associated with typhoons. An AR is a long and narrow horizontal flow of water vapor. ARs have not been pointed out as a cause of heavy rainfall associated with typhoons, and its formation process and mechanism have not been elucidated. However, ARs may bring heavy rainfall which results in disasters of floods and landslides in its landing region. It is, therefore, important to investigate the characteristics and structure of AR associated with typhoons.

The first purpose of this study is to investigate the presence of an AR associated with typhoons. Five cases of typhoons are investigated in this study: Typhoon Talas (2011), Typhoon Wipha (2013), Typhoon Etau (2015), Typhoon Jebi (2018), and TyphoonHagibis (2019). The second purpose is to investigate the structure and evolution of ARs associated with typhoons. Finally, among these typhoons, we focus on Typhoon Talas (2011), and examine the relationship of the AR to the heavy rainfall in the area away from the heavy rainfall area around the Kii Peninsula caused by the cloud system nearthe center of Talas.

Using the integrated water vapor amount obtained from the JRA55 data, an ARs associated with typhoons were examined. As a result, ARs associated with typhoons were detected in five cases of Typhoon Talas (2011), Typhoon Etau (2015), Typhoon Jebi (2018), Typhoon Hagibis (2019), and for Typhoon Wipha (2013). Moreover, the vertical structure of these ARs showed that the amount of water vapor was large in the lower layer of all ARs. In addition, from the vertical distribution of the equivalent potential temperature, it was found that AR regions are convectively unstable in the lower and middle layers.

On the five typhoon cases of typhoon, Typhoon Talas (2011) has a remarkable AR. The development stage of the AR was divided into four stages. In the stages 2 and 3, the first and the second ARs are merged. The resulted AR made landfall over Shizuoka prefecture. The total rainfall amount in Shizuoka prefecture from September 2 to 4, 2011 was estimated using the radar data of the Japan Meteorological Agency. A region of precipitation exceeding 1400 mm was found in the landfall region of the AR. Inaddition, a total rainfall amount of 924 mm was observed at the Ikawa AMeDAS point. The AR associated with Typhoon Talas caused heavy rainfall in Shizuoka prefecture far from the center of the typhoon. In addition, the heavy rainfall in Shizuoka prefecture on September 2 brought about by the AR can be considered as a Predecessor Rain Event.
