Algorithm for the identification and tracking convective cells (AITCC)

Improvement of a three-dimensional detection algorithm for precipitation cells : Application to precipitation systems over the Nobi Plain

Satoshi OKAWARA

Detection and tracking of precipitation cells is important in estimateing rainfall quantitatively and short-term forecasting. Use of discriminating stages of precipitation cells in their life-cycle is benefical in tracking of precipitation cells. This study improves a threedimensional detection algorithm for precipitation cells developed in a previous study and applies it to discrimitate stages of precipitation cells in precipitation systems over the Nobi Plain. Also, this study tries to track precipitation cells using the Algorithm for the Identification and Tracking Convective Cells (AITCC).

The improvement of the algorithm is conducted using data of reflectivity and threedimensional wind by a dual-Doppler analysis using two X-band polarimetric Doppler radars located at Nagoya University and Anjo City, Aichi Perfecture, Japan. Data are used only above a height of 1.5 km above the ground level to remove the effect of ground clutter on reflectivity. Precipitation cells are detected from the three-dimensional reflectivity data set and ”updraft cells” and ”downdraft cells”(vertical draft cells) are detected from the threedimensional wind data calculated from the dual-Doppler analysis. Here, precipitation cells are defined the region that is surrounded by 30 dBZe closed surface and that has only one peak. When the region has some peaks, the region is devied into by the number of peaks. The boundary is plane that has minimum reflectivity. Vertical draft cells are defined the region that is surrounded by 0.5 m/s (the absolute value of vertical draft velocity) closed surface and has only one peak. Matching up precipitation cells and vertical draft cells discriminate stages of precipitation cells in their life-cycle.

In this study, examine criterions of linkages of precipitation cells and vertical draft cells. Linkages mean thier two types cells are overlapped adequately. Overlapping parameters:such as ”overlapping volume”, ”ratio of volume of a precipitation cell to overlapping volume” and ”ratio of volume of a veritical draft cell to overlapping volume” are caluclated for 1173 overlapping pairs of 175 cells and 805 vertical draft cells observed from 2300 Japan Standerd Time (JST) August 9 to 0000 JST August 10 2009. Then linkage of the precipitation and vertical draft cells is evaluated to set thresholds of overlapping parameters. Here the thresholds of ”overlapping volume” and ”ratio of a precipitation cell to overlapping volume” set to 2 km3 and 7%, respectively. The threshold of ”ratio of a veritical draft cell to overlapping volume” does not set, because significant difference is not recognized. Matching up precipitation cells and vertical draft cells, discriminates the developing, mature, dissipating stages of precpitation cells in their life-cycle. In this study, the result of stages discrimination is 5 stages (the developing, mature, dissipating, apparent-developing, apparent-dissipating stages). If a volume of a precipitation cell that is not able to calculate three-dimensional winds under the melting level is greater than 7%, a precioitation cell linked only updraft cells disciminates the apparent developing stage and that linked only downdraft cells disciminates the apparent disspating stage. Stages of total 175 precipitation cells are discriminated during the observation period.

Furthermore, precipitation cells discriminated stages in their life-cycle are tracked using AITCC. The movement of almost precipitation cells are tracked using AITCC in comparison with their tracking by human eyes The evolution of a stage of a precipitation cell from the mature to the disspating stages is also tracked. Some precipitation cells tracked by AITCC are succeeded in tracking time variation of stages of precipitation cells.
