Characteristics of heavy rain systems in southern Gifu on 15 July 2010

Koichi INAGAKI

Many heavy rains are caused by meso-scale precipitation system with linear rainband. The formation mechanism of the linear rainband to bring a heavy rain has been studied by many researchers. Some of widely accepted explanations are given on the heavy rain. It is necessary for us to examine how the precipitation cell and cell group (alignment of cells) bring rain and what kind of cell and cell group compose the heavy rain systems in order to explain the accumulation process of heavy rainfall amount quantitatively. A purpose of this study is to clearify the process of the heavy rain and the organization of cell and cell group in the heavy rain systems of linear rainband on 15 July, 2010 in the southern Gifu, Japan.

We analyzed the X-band multi-parameter radar data of the Ministry of Land, In frastructure, Transport and Tourism. The radar system was under opperation from the beggining of July 2010. Accurate rainfall intensity was estimated every 5 minutes by using specific differential phase for Cartesian grid of 1 km × 1 km × 0.25 km.

We distinguished cell and cell group that formed a linear rainband which was identified in the distribution of hourly accumulated rainfall and revealed characteristics of cell and cell group in the rainband. As a result, we confirmed the presence of a stationary system where cell groups moved along the orientation of the rainband and a fast moving system where cell groups moved perpendicular to the orientation of the cell group. The stationary system was composed of six cell groups. Among the six cell groups, the maximum rainfall on the ground of the five cell groups was more than 50 mm (one was 52 mm and the others were more than 80 mm). The maximum rainfall of the three cell groups of the fast moving system was more than about 50 mm and only the cell group appeared first was more than 70 mm. Area of 200 mm or 300 mm of heavy rain was formed by overlapping of cell groups which composed two rainfall systems in a half day.

Examination of cell groups which composed two rainfall systems with dient char acteristics showed that seven cell groups had a common characteristics of elongation to the northeast except one. The stationary rainfall system had a larger number of cells in the cell groups and a longer life than that of the fast moving system. The precipitation equivciency (the ratio of rainfall amount and the water vapor which owed into cell groups) of cell groups was lerge as 18% - 40%.

Rainfall amount brought on the ground by each cells of the stationary system was 20 mm - 45 mm, and that of the fast moving system was 43 mm - 70 mm. The characteristics of the stationary system was that total rainfall amount brought on the ground by each cell groups was 50 mm - 80 mm and larger than that of the fast moving system, though the rainfall amount of each cell was 20 mm - 45 mm and smaller than that of the fast moving one. The large amount of the rainfall of cell groups in the stationary system was expained that the cell group included plural cells and they passed over the same place.

The characteristics of the fast moving system was that total rainfall amount brought on the ground by each cell groups was 50 mm - 70 mm and smaller than that of the stationary system, though the rainfall amount of each cell was 43 mm - 70 mm and lager than that of the stationary one. The small amount of the rainfall of cell groups in the fast moving system was expained that only one cell brought rainfall on the ground.

Analyses on the characteristics of rainfall systems including Doppler velocity data of the X-band multi-parameter radar provided implication on the formation mechanism of the heavy rain system of 15 July 2010 in southern Gifu.
