Characteristics of Winter Thunderclouds Observed with
Dual Polarization Radar in HOKURIKU District

Keiichiro SAKASHITA

During the winter season in HOKURIKU, thunderclouds cause lightnings around the coast. In previous studies on the thunderclouds, the mechanism of electrification and separation, which is essential part of the occurrence of lightning discharge, attracted attention; However, little studies investigated characteristics of thunderclouds as cumulonimbus clouds. Observations of distribution of graupels in thunderclouds were scarce up to this day. But, we have to direct our eyes to characteristics of thunderclouds as cumulonimbus clouds as well as lightning discharge, and colligate both of them. In this study, a development process of thundercloud, and a relation between a distribution of graupels in thunderclouds and a position and polarity of cloud-to-ground discharge were investigated. Hokuriku Electric Power Company's (HEPC's) dual polarization radar data and HEPC's Lightning Location System data from December 2000 to Februaly 2001 and from December 2001 to Februaly 2002 were utilized. The dual polarization radar can identify precipitation perticles.

Thunderclouds moved eastward, developed near the coastline, and formed 'Thundercloud cell'. An area of existence of graupels observed in the leeward side of thunderclouds. It was suggested that the graupels were generated over the altitude of -10℃ layer and that they had negative charge, according to Takahashi (1978). Cloud-to-ground discharges occured in the mature stage and at the beginning of declination of the thunderclouds. After cloud-to-ground discharges, thunderclouds were broken-down rapidly. Thunderclouds could be distinguished between a short thundercloud less than 3km height and tall thunderclouds. A short thundercloud became mature stage near the coastline. Then, positive ground flash occured in the short thundercloud.
